Sneaker culture has exploded in recent years, with new trendy styles popping up constantly. I find myself “needing” a new pair almost every week. However, this surge in demand raises the question: how do brands get the materials that are needed in a way that is harmless to the environment? Among these materials, leather stands out for its durability, comfort, and timeless appeal. Yet, the leather industry has faced scrutiny for its environmental impact and ethical concerns. In this article, we delve into the world of ethical sneaker crafting and sustainable sneaker sourcing, focusing specifically on how to ethically source leather for sneakers.
Understanding Ethical Sourcing:
Ethical sourcing entails more than just considering the environmental impact of materials; it also encompasses social responsibility, fair labor practices, and animal welfare. When it comes to leather, this means seeking out suppliers who are committed to following these guidelines.
Environmental Impact:
Look for leather suppliers who prioritize sustainability in their production processes. This includes minimizing water usage, reducing chemical use in tanning processes, and implementing waste reduction strategies. Additionally, consider suppliers who use leather from tanneries certified by organizations such as the Leather Working Group, which promotes environmental best practices within the leather industry. Social Responsibility:
Ethical sourcing extends to the treatment of workers throughout the supply chain. Seek out suppliers who ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for workers’ rights. Knowing what your clothes are made of and where they come from is more important than you think. Opt for suppliers who can trace the origin of their leather and provide assurance that it is produced under ethical conditions so you know what you are purchasing. You can use this tool on Leather Working Group's website to find a certified supplier of ethically-sourced leather.

Animal Welfare:
For those concerned about animal welfare, sourcing leather from suppliers who adhere to humane practices is essential. Look for certifications such as the Leather Working Group’s Animal Welfare Guidelines or standards set by organizations like the Responsible Leather Round Table, which promote ethical treatment of animals throughout the leather production process.

Ethical Sneaker Brands Leading the Way:
Two of my favorite brands that have implemented ethical practices are:

Adidas: Adidas has committed to sourcing leather from suppliers who comply with rigorous environmental and social standards. The brand is a member of the Leather Working Group and works closely with its suppliers to ensure transparency and accountability in the leather supply chain.

Veja: Veja is renowned for its sustainable approach to sneaker production, including its use of ethically sourced leather. The brand prioritizes transparency and works directly with small-scale producers in Brazil to ensure fair labor practices and environmental sustainability throughout the leather supply chain.
As consumers, we hold the power to choose what brands and, simultaneously, what practices we support by making informed choices about what to purchase. By prioritizing ethical sourcing practices, we can back brands that uphold high standards of environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and animal welfare. When it comes to leather sneakers, opting for brands that prioritize ethical sourcing is not only a fashion statement but also a step towards a more sustainable and ethical future for the sneaker industry.
